Syracuse Chapter of Dollars for Scholars

Syracuse Dollars for Scholars is a foundation – made up of concerned community and school members – that raises scholarship money and provides financial assistance to help students pursue a higher education.

The Nebraska program started in July 2000, with a $500,000 donation from Col. Barney Oldfield, a native of Johnson County.  Col. Oldfield also contributed an additional $50,000 to provide $2,000 matching grants to 25 communities.  Syracuse was a recipient of one of those grants.

A check for $2,000 was presented to the Syracuse Foundation in February, 2002, by Ardyce Bohlke of Hastings, executive director of the Vada Kinman Oldfield and Col. Barney Oldfield Nebraska Dollars for Scholars organization.  The Syracuse Foundation, Inc. donated $2,000.00 in matching funds to qualify for the grant, making $4,000.00 available for new scholarships.

In January 2003, members of the Syracuse Foundation established the local Syracuse Dollars for Scholars organization for scholarships given to students graduating from Syracuse High School.  A Board of Directors, separate from the Syracuse Foundation, was composed of nine members.

To date, over $25,000 in scholarships ranging from $500 to $1000 each, has been given to students graduating from Syracuse High School from the Syracuse Chapter of Dollars for Scholars.  From 2003 to 2004, the amount awarded more than doubled from $2800 to $6000.   In 2005 we awarded $4000.

The Syracuse Chapter continues to look for ways to fund future scholarships for students wanting to continue their education. Currently, donations from alumni are the main source of funding for the scholarships.  We also use these donations for matching grants.  Funding also comes from the Syracuse United Fund Drive, memorial contributions, corporate donations, in-kind donations, and local organizations.

We encourage you to give as generously as you can, but be assured that any and all gifts are appreciated.  With your help, we can make our scholarship program successful!!!
